I’ve been using this computer for about 3 weeks now, and am quite happy with its performance and battery life. It has switchable graphics and automatically (unless disabled) switches between built-in graphics when battery powered and dedicated graphics (ATI HD6550) when wall cube powered. I don’t use this computer for gaming, but the HD6550 is a fairly respectable card. Battery life is listed at 7.75 hours. I was originally seeing around 6 hours in my typical usage scenario (see note re change below). I am also pleased with its thermal management. When working hard it gets warm – but not hot. Air exhaust is on the left, toward the back of the case, which is an acceptable location. Since it is billed as an “entertainment” laptop, there is a goodly amount of HP software installed for managing audio, video, photos, etc. I thought I would remove most of this, but found it to be relatively inoffensive and even useful at times. I’ve had it for over a month now and it’s handled just about everything I have thrown at it. Very happy. I had the i7 Macbook Pro for a while and wasn’t impressed with the build quality or service I received from their stores so I returned it and picked up an HP DV7.

Things I like….
- Bluray drive
- Modular design (easy to fix, repair…drop-in replacements)
- Space for TWO hard drives
- One year hardware warranty + one year tech support (not 90 days like Apple)
- Light on bloatware….has norton but was easy to uninstall. However, it DOES ASK YOU during the initial setup if you wish to install Norton.
- Wildtangent games were simple to uninstall.
- Bright LCD
- Intel power saving = auto-dimming based on screen content, not ambient light. This actually does save battery.

Things I love…
- Keyboard with 10 Key

I am no stranger to laptops, this is my 6th. I’ve owned Dell, Toshiba and Asus laptops, this is my first HP. It is replacing my Toshiba x205-s9349 which at 3 1/2 years old has become sluggish and a couple of times shut off by itself signaling the end might be near. I spend all day (and night) on my laptop and use it for surfing, photography, watching streaming movies, updating my iPod and iPhone and watching Blu-ray movies. I also use it to watch streaming live events on ESPN3 such as ALMS racing and college football which on my old laptop I connected to my TV via 25FT HDMI TO HDMI Cable. After checking reviews and features, I found this model had great reviews and most of the features I wanted. 2. My first Laptop HP Pavilion Dv7

   This is not only the first laptop I’ve owned but Win 7 is a bit of a learning curve compared to the XP I’ve become so used to. I do wish that HP would settle on some more formidible basic software other than the large amount of bloatware that comes loaded. I’ll need to wade through the morass and delete what is redundant and has less usefulness. As far as the laptop itself, it feels very delicate, especially the dvd drive. Not that the laptop is made cheaply, it just feels generally less substantial than a pc. I find myself on egg shells loading a disc into the dvd drive for fear it will snap. In addition, the discs aren’t easy to snap into place either- you must have a steady hand. My 13 year old son and I love the finger print reader- it’s way cool! The display is large, bright, clear and the graphics adjustable. I periodically get a message that states my cpu usage is high? Not too sure what that means since I tend to run at the lower levels of usage most of the time. The keyboard is nicely laid out and feels good to the touch- though I find my fingers hitting other keys as I type which is rather annoying. The webcam is clear and blows away my husband’s new Dell Inspiron touch’s cam. It’s slow and the image lacks the quality I have on my HP. The speed of my HP also betters the Dell, though to be fair, the Dell has a terrabite of hardrive space to deal with vs. the 750GB on the HP. I tend to also prefer my 17in. screen over than the Dell’s 23in. Mine seems more crisp and the colors … more »

   I purchased the dv7-4280us from HP. I ordered on Friday at noon and received the computer on the following Tuesday. This was with the free shipping! I thought 2 business days after ordering was pretty speedy.I chose this laptop primarily for the graphics because I do digital scrapbooking. My older laptop (also an HP) struggled with the scrapbooking program. The problem was graphics and, as it goes with computers, it made more sense to buy a new computer than attempt an upgrade.The graphics card in this computer is switchable which means when the computer is running off battery, the graphics card works as an integrated card to conserve power. When the computer is running off the power cord, the graphics card works as a dedicated card – more power!I am very pleased with the performance overall. Not being a gamer, I have absolutely all the power I need.The keyboard has a good touch, but the keys seem to be further spaced apart than in my other laptop and requires adjusting to. The keyboard is not backlit. The touchpad I also like. I find myself using my cordless mouse less although I have not mastered the two fingered scrolling.I was not interested in the fingerprint scanner when I ordered, but now it is my favorite feature. … more »

   I was impressed with the speed of the computer and the screen size seems bigger than I thought.. The beats audio has fantastic sound… the 2 things I am disappointed in which is important.. is the keyboard is hard to see the letters…and the left and right click on the keyboard I cant work with one hand.. you have to really press hard to get it to work and I have to use two hands to do it. I can get around this with a mouse which I have rarely used in the past with my other laptop. out of a 5 star I rate this 3 1/2 because of the touch pad and keyboard

   The HP dv7 Notebook has the fast process speed I was needing. I was impressed with the finger print log on feature and the big keyboard size. As for the mouse pad, it could use a better design. I had to learn to type without touching the pad or the type would make mistakes. I changed the load time from 30 seconds to 15, so I didn’t have to wait for the system to go online. Today’s processor speed and RAM speed can adapt. I chose this model because of the higher processor speed and it came with 6GB RAM, although an upgrade for 8GB was only a small amount of money more. The big monitor screen makes the work on the computer easy to see and is the perfect size for my eyes. I was searching for the back lit keyboard feature, but I somehow forgot that I was looking for one. That is the only thing I wish I would have chosen to have on this model. The Norton software came with a free subscription that was usable for more than a year as an added feature.

   I am a web developer replacing a desktop workstation, so needed a good 17.3″ screen plus a processor that can handle whatever Adobe and emerging web technologies throws at me in the next two years. Expandable RAM (it can go to 16) along with ports for device connectivity are all key for me. Bluetooth built in – strong wifi… and needless to say, my screen and keyboard are a quality of life issue I shopped extensively and researched my perfect laptop. I found an HP dv7 that met 90% of my criteria at Best Buy. I fell in love with the features, the keyboard feel and the styling; simple, clean sophistication.I ordered a dv7-6179us from hpdirect to get the Raedon graphics card vs the default Intel integrated one. I also wanted the 9 cell battery (10+ hrs is a work day on the road!). I didn’t see where I needed the non-glare screen with super high resolution.I am more impressed now that I’m working on it.VERY quick and clean initial startup to get going. The LED screen is much more “color true” than the LCD I used before. The machine is fast even under heavy processor load. The fan has come on only a few times, and less heat than my 2 yr old Sony Vaio. The sound is great and i even appreciated not having to clean out a bunch of software. First off, I am a HUGE gamer, and finding a decent enough laptop that can handle new games with ease for a price easy on the pocket is definitely difficult.
This, my friends, is probably the best one you could find.
My old laptop I bought 3 years ago and had for 2-and-a-half years was an HP Pavilion dv7 that was one of the higher-end models for about $1100. It worked very well, even with an integrated video card, but after having it replaced 4 times under the warranty, I decided it was time to move on.
I searched high and low, and was originally going to buy the now top of the line dv7 model, but figured I couldn’t afford it.
Then, I found this one, and I just knew it was perfect.

AMD’s A8-3500m may seem like a lower-end quad core processor compared to Intel’s i7, but it by far makes up with it by having a very strong gpu. That by itself is rated to perform as well as a Radeon 5650, which isn’t too shabby. The processor runs very well compared to my… Read more

Took me a long time to search to internet for a good a8-3500 laptop. This was the best one for the value and 100$ off of retail as well. Some things to consider.
1.Energy efficiency 11w idle – 20 average docs,webs, bursts to 60w load i think.
2.High end video card HD 6750M/6620g almost rated class 1 but rated at top of classs 2 [class 1 cards usually 1000$ range higher] and its 1600×900 resolution. Now thats nice combo, while others are lower resolution. This is by FAR best graphics+ resolution + efficient processor.
3. Plays lot modern games on High settings.
4. Amd cata suite says crossfire mode, havnt really messed with it. Laptop has sticker that says as well.
5. Battery lasts long anywhere from 2-9 hours depending on tasks. Games usually tend to drain battery in all laptops.
Cons
1. Vga+hdmi TOO CLOSE together cant run 2 monitors. Just bought for dual monitor with extra usb monitor total of 3.

I’m sure this is a fantastic laptop. I ordered one and it’s beautiful and seems great for the average user. All of the product specifications listed here are correct EXCEPT for the Processor speed. This lists the processor at 2.4Ghz, but when I booted this up and checked, it showed up as 1.50Ghz. I sent it back asking for an exchange for the correct laptop, but I was issued a refund with no further explanation.

I need the faster CPU for some games I want to play so I’ll find another model, but keep that in mind if you order it. You may want to check the actual specs when you receive it and make sure it matches the description.

   I bought this computer with few things in mind, a little playing, studies, watching HD movies and all day use laptop. I love the way the laptop looks and feels, it has an awesome finish, it’s good from every angle, Beats audio is excellent and sounds awesome, fingerprint sensor works great on logging in windows, but not to manage passwords for internet logging sites with firefox, only with internet explorer, maybe an update should fix that, touchpad is responsive, keyboard is good, but i should have preferred the one of the envy, which is illuminated, the webcam works good on good light, perfomance is slightly reduced when on low light conditions. I installed Test Drive 2 Unlimited and Alice: Madness Returns to test the gaming part, and i must say im dissatisfied, The games have to be on the lowest graphics setting to work good, not awesome, even with crossfire or using the High Performance graphics processor, LED screen is great, has nice contrast, everything looks good on it, HD videos play beautifully, it doesnt included a Bluray player thought, I put one I had here to test it. Battery life is awesome on this computer, considering it’s size, type of processor and accent lighting it has, i can pass a full day on college with normal use, playing it last like a few hours in my experience, i was able to watch like 3 movies of 1 hour and 45 minutes each. 2. A shame it stopped working soon

   I bought the notebook one month ago and was extremely satisfied with it. The computer was really quiet and had a very good graphic performance as well as audio performance.But 3 days ago it simply shutted down without any reason and a blue screen appeared and the computer turned off. Then, when I restarted the computer, Windows advised me that there was a problem with the graphics card and it needed to be reinstalled or repaired (something like that). Ok! So, I reinstalled the AMD software hopping everything would be fine and restarted Windows to apply the changes. The problem persisted and from this day on it is was getting worse and worse. Now, the computer starts when it wants to, it hardly boots and, when it happens, it stays on for a short time the shuts down again and I have to pray for it to turn on. Looks like the display adapter is about to die. [...] Now I have to keep a computer that will not trust any more!I just wish the computer had last longer, cause while it worked I was really happy with it.HP’s? ANY MORE!

You all have gotta get one of these HP laptop’s before the $630-$670 prices on them go away. These laptops are truly remarkable, and the laptop it’s self is pretty dang fast. Mine came with bluetooth (which i thought it wouldn’t but it did thankfully), there 17.3 screen sizes, and it comes with a chargers and battery and everything. You’d have to be crazy to pass up a deal like this, and to see a laptop like this at Wal-mart or K-mart that sales for $800+, and my laptop I bought right here and looking at the stats. I can honestly say, thank god for amazon and this great price. The laptop I bought was new and factory sealed like they said, Im very very pleased with my laptop.
